Best film cameras for a tight budget

Consider the Olympus OM-10, Nikon EM and Canon EOS 300, with practical checks to help you find a usable first camera.

For a first film camera on a tight budget, look for a tested body with a usable lens already attached. These three models are sensible alternatives to chasing a collectible camera. Their availability and the condition of individual listings will determine which is the better purchase where you live.

Olympus OM-10: a small manual-focus SLR

The OM-10 offers aperture-priority exposure. You focus and choose the aperture, then the camera selects the shutter speed. A normal OM-system lens makes a manageable everyday kit.

The optional Manual Adapter is needed to select ordinary shutter speeds manually. Check whether it is included if that matters to you. The original manual explains the adapter and the camera’s battery requirements.

Nikon EM: fewer exposure decisions

The Nikon EM is another compact aperture-priority SLR. It suits someone happy to focus manually while letting the meter handle shutter speed. Nikon’s history describes the EM and the small Series E lenses introduced alongside it.

It offers limited manual shutter control. If choosing every exposure setting is central to your plans, look at the beginner SLR guide before settling on one.

A usable first kit needs a tested camera body, compatible lens, correct battery and a test roll, with seller return terms checked.
Compare complete, usable kits. A body-only listing still needs a compatible lens. Ask what has been tested and what comes in the box.

Canon EOS 300: autofocus and familiar controls

The EOS 300, also called the Rebel 2000, offers autofocus and several exposure modes. It is worth a look if you want to start in automatic mode and try manual settings later.

It uses Canon EF lenses. Canon FD, RF and EF-S lenses are different systems and are not suitable substitutes. Canon’s museum entry confirms the model’s controls and lens mount.

Choose the better-tested example

Ask for a recent developed test roll, clear lens photographs and confirmation that the meter and film transport work. Check the correct batteries and the seller’s return terms. A camera described as untested gives you less information about whether you’ll be able to use it.

Compare camera details and sample photographs for the models you find. Keep your first kit simple, then use a test roll to learn whether the camera works as described and whether you enjoy carrying it.
