Buying a film camera on eBay: models and checks
Start with a few useful camera searches, inspect model details, and learn what to ask before buying a vintage body on eBay.

Search eBay for an exact camera model, then spend as much time reading the condition description as looking at the photographs. Two cameras with the same name can need very different amounts of work.
A few searches to start with
For an SLR, try the Canon AE-1, Nikon FE or Olympus OM-1. They give you different controls to compare: the AE-1 has shutter-priority automation, the FE has aperture-priority automation, and the OM-1 is a manual camera.
Use the Canon museum entry, Nikon’s FE history and our OM-1 page to get familiar with the names before opening listings.
Use our camera pages to research a model and explore its sample photos. The eBay and Amazon links open retailer searches, where you can inspect the photographs and condition of the actual camera for sale.

Search order doesn’t measure sales
The first results aren’t a list of the most-purchased cameras. eBay’s Best Match guide describes how search results are ordered. Promoted listings can also appear higher.
Check whether a listing is for a camera body, a kit with a lens, or a serviced camera. Once you’ve opened a listing, confirm the exact model and what is included before ordering.
Ask about the test
A useful question is: has a roll been shot and developed through this camera? Also ask whether the meter responds, all shutter speeds operate, film advances and rewinds, and the flash works where fitted.
Ask for photographs of the lens glass and battery compartment if the listing doesn’t show them. Check whether the camera needs a separate lens or servicing before it can be used.
Read the actual return terms before paying. If the listing says untested or for parts, it may not take photographs. The used-camera checklist has a few more questions to take to a seller.
