Pentax K1000 vs Minolta X-700: which should you buy?
Choose a mechanical manual camera or an SLR with Program and aperture priority. Compare the K1000 and X-700 with real film photos and kit advice.
Our verdict: Choose the K1000 if manual exposure is the point of learning film, or choose the X-700 if you want aperture priority and Program to help you get started.

Pentax K1000
Minolta X-700
There are two useful ways to learn film: practise setting every exposure yourself, or let the camera handle exposure while you get used to loading, focusing and developing. The K1000 fits the first routine. The X-700 can support either, with more help available at the start.
Exposure modes: a manual lesson or room to delegate
On the K1000, you set shutter speed and aperture. Its meter helps you decide. It does not change those settings for you. That makes it easy to connect the action of turning a control with the exposure you make.
The X-700 adds aperture priority and Program. In aperture priority you choose the lens opening. In Program the camera chooses both exposure settings with a suitable lens. The Pentax instructions and Minolta instructions describe the differences. Both cameras still require manual focus.
Batteries: an independent shutter or electronic control
The Pentax shutter is mechanical. Its meter needs a battery, but you can release the shutter without one and meter separately. The Minolta needs power for both the shutter and meter, including in manual exposure mode.
That is a practical reason to prefer the K1000 for a trip where you specifically want battery-independent shutter operation. It does not establish that an individual K1000 will be reliable without service. Ask for a recent operational test from either seller, especially across slow and fast shutter settings.
Finder experience: manual mode is not the whole story
The K1000’s meter needle is part of the routine: look through the finder, focus, change settings and watch the needle. The X-700’s illuminated shutter-speed display is particularly useful when automatic exposure starts choosing slow speeds as the light falls.
Try reading each display with the camera at your eye. Ask for a finder photograph if you cannot inspect it in person. K1000 focusing aids vary between examples, so check the actual screen rather than relying on a generic model photograph. Neither body focuses the lens for you.
Lens kits: Pentax K versus Minolta SR
The K1000 uses K mount and needs a suitable lens with manual aperture control. The X-700 uses Minolta’s manual-focus SR system. For its intended Program operation, look for an appropriate MD lens and follow the manual’s setup. Minolta AF is a different mount.
Compare bodies with similar standard lenses and similar test evidence. Include any service allowance, shipping and return costs before calling one cheaper. Optical condition and a working diaphragm are worth more to a first roll than a bag of questionable accessories.

If your class requires manual exposure, a tested K1000 is our first choice between these two. If you want to take pictures with exposure help and practise manual settings later, start with the X-700. Use the inspection guide to judge the kit before deciding on the model name.

Common questions
Is the Pentax K1000 or Minolta X-700 better for beginners?
The K1000 is the clearer fit for a manual-exposure course. The X-700 is easier to start with if you want exposure automation while learning manual focus. Choose the learning routine you want, then compare tested kits.
Does the Minolta X-700 work without batteries?
It needs batteries for its electronic shutter and meter. The K1000 can fire its mechanical shutter without a battery, although its meter then does not work.
Can the X-700 shoot in full manual mode?
Yes. It has manual exposure as well as aperture priority and Program. It still needs batteries when used in manual mode.
