Canon AE-1 Program vs Minolta X-700: which should you buy?
Both have Program, but their other automatic modes differ. Compare exposure control, manual focus, lens compatibility and real sample photographs.
Our verdict: Choose the AE-1 Program if you want Program plus shutter priority, or choose the X-700 if you want Program plus aperture priority.

Canon AE-1 Program
Minolta X-700
Both cameras let a newcomer begin with automatic exposure and manual focus. The useful difference appears when you want more control than Program gives you. The AE-1 Program lets you lead with shutter speed. The X-700 lets you lead with aperture.
Exposure modes: what you get after Program
The Canon combines Program, shutter priority and manual exposure. The Minolta combines Program, aperture priority and manual exposure. In Program, both can choose the two exposure settings with the correct compatible lens and setup.
For a portrait where you want a particular depth of field, we prefer the Minolta’s aperture priority. If you want to hold a shutter speed for movement, the Canon’s shutter priority is useful. These are documented in Canon’s museum entry and the X-700 manual.
Lens coupling: confirm the automatic mode works
The Canon uses FD lenses with the appropriate automatic setting. The Minolta uses the manual-focus SR system, with MD lenses intended for full Program coupling. Check the exact lens and the manual’s setup before assuming an included lens supports every mode.
The systems do not share lenses directly. Canon EF and Minolta AF are different mounts from the ones these bodies use. If you already have a clean compatible lens, price the body you need around it. Otherwise compare complete standard-lens kits with equivalent optical condition and test evidence.
Batteries: both are electronic cameras
Both need batteries for shutter operation. Manual mode means that you choose the exposure settings. It does not remove the electrical requirement. A spare battery belongs with either kit.
Ask the seller to test the meter, automatic exposure and manual shutter settings. An advance lever moving freely does not demonstrate that the shutter or exposure system works. If a listing only says the camera powers on, ask what was actually tested and whether a recent roll was developed successfully.
Finder and focus: the part you still do yourself
Both use a through-the-lens SLR view and manual focusing aids. The Canon has an LED aperture display and interchangeable screens. The Minolta displays shutter-speed information. That affects what you watch when working automatically, especially as light levels fall.
Try the screen and readout with your glasses if you use them. Confirm which screen is installed on a used Canon, and ask for a clear finder photograph from either seller. Program can simplify exposure, but it cannot rescue a photograph focused on the background instead of the subject.

If you do not yet know, choose the cleaner tested kit with better returns and leave money for film and processing. Use the inspection guide to compare the listings.

Common questions
Which is better, the AE-1 Program or X-700?
Both can automate shutter speed and aperture. The Canon is the better fit if you also want shutter priority. The Minolta fits aperture-priority shooting. A tested kit and your existing lenses can settle the choice.
Do the AE-1 Program and X-700 have autofocus?
No. Both use manual focus. Their Program modes automate exposure settings, so you still need to focus the lens yourself.
Which is better for beginners?
Both let you start in Program and learn exposure controls later. Choose the Canon if you expect to practise controlling movement with shutter speed, or the Minolta if you expect to choose aperture for depth of field.
